topPUNDIT is a web-based programme for sports prediction leagues that allows groups and individuals to make predictions on major sporting events.

Definition of PUNDIT

pundit [puhn-dit] - noun

  • a learned person, expert, or authority.
  • a person who makes comments or judgments, esp. in an authoritative manner; a critic or commentator.
  • pandit [Hindi pandit from Sanskrit panditah - learned man, (adj.) learned]
  • a player or predictor on www.topPUNDIT.

The word first made it's way into the English language when pundits were used as scouts and negotiators for the British Army during the "Great Game" in Central Asia, especially Afghanistan.


History

topPUNDIT originated with 6 friends in a pub having a chat over a few beers. Predictions were initially written down on the back of a napkin, with the winner enjoying free beer the following weekend. Over the years, napkins morphed into spreadsheets and the league of friends grew.

In 2005, construction of www.toppundit.com with a fully automated registration procedure and email reminders was completed. Predictions could be saved (and changed) right up to the deadline. Tallying of results was also automated, meaning capacity for players is limited only by bandwidth and server speed. By the start of the 2006 European football season, topPUNDIT had hundreds of PUNDITs making predictions in over 20 competitions.


Mission

topPUNDIT's mission is to provide simple, but engaging sports predictions games to a global audience. Based on a subscription model, topPUNDIT aims to offer an enhanced user experience compared to the many 'me too' games that are springing up on the web. topPUNDIT is unique in it's ability to personalise prediction leagues and player profiles.

New sports prediction leagues such as for cricket, motor racing and rugby will be introduced over the next year. Chat forums, online credit card payment, public leagues and sporting links will soon be added to make topPUNDIT the premier prediction league portal on the Internet. topPUNDIT will soon be adding games, sports polls, merchandise, video funnies, galleries and much much more, so that it's not only a place to visit to make that weekly prediction.
